The History of Granite State Forest Product, Inc.As is often the case, entrepreneurs travel several roads before deciding on the one to stay with. The following is a brief history of how Granite State Forest Products, Inc. came to be. In the mid 1970’s a log home business was created to satisfy the up and coming interest in both traditional and contemporary log buildings. It wasn’t long before the new "Log Forms" had flourished and outgrown its rented facility and a move to a larger more permanent place was needed. Land was purchased on the Old Concord Road in Henniker, which provided ample space for future plans. It was here that the planer mill was constructed and thus began a bright and promising future. On the same site in 1979 a softwood division of one of the leading hardwood manufacturers was established. In 1985, the then softwood division cut the cord from the mother company and became an entity all its own. With some encouragement from a fish processing plant in New Bedford, Massachusetts, "Granite State Forest Products" expanded to include a box shop. The boxes produced are used all over the country, in stores displaying a diverse selection of products. During the second half of the 1990’s dry kilns were added to the ever-growing facility. Highly advanced computers control the kilns. This enables us to provide a consistent high quality dried lumber, timbers, and specialty products to our customers. In the early 2000, Granite State Forest Products, Inc. was processing over 13 million board feet of Eastern White Pine and had over 100 employees. Products were sold wholesale all over the country and internationally. However, as time went on, the lumber market began to change. The demand for lumber began to fall off as the demand for wholesale log home components began to increase. In 2005 Granite State Forest Products, Inc. lost part of its business to a major fire. This was a turning point for the business. They could either rebuild what was lost or redirect their business. The owners decided to change their business model and began focusing solely on log home and timber frame components. Today, Granite
State Forest Products, Inc. focuses solely on producing log home and timber
frame components and selling them at wholesale prices. The sawmill is
gone. A new building, replacing one that was destroyed in the fire of
2005, houses a new, state of the art, planing mill and work line for pre-cutting
corners and making false corners. Eastern White Pine cants and boards
are brought in from neighboring sawmills and milled into log home logs,
structural timbers, siding, and other log home and timber frame building
materials.
